Medications Safe for Use in Pregnancy
The over-the-counter medications and directions listed below are safe to take during pregnancy. Even so, we recommend not using any medication unless necessary. Please discuss all prescription medicines with your physician at your first visit.
If you are unsure about a medication you take regularly, please contact our advice line at 781-9555 ext. 6886 PRIOR TO DISCONTINUING THAT MEDICATION. Take all medications according to the manufacturers directions listed on the bottle unless otherwise directed by your physician.
We recommend that you discontinue any herbal remedy use during your pregnancy. There has been no testing of effects of medicinal herb use during pregnancy. If there is a question, please contact our advice line at 781-9555 ext. 6886.
Antihistamines
Allegra, Benadryl, Claritin, Claritin D*, Dimetapp, Tavist, Sudafed*
Cough/Cold/Congestion
Actifed*, Drixoril*, Humidifier and increase fluids, Saline nasal spray, Mucinex, Robitussin DM
Diarrhea
"BRAT" diet-bananas, rice, applesauce, toast, Kaopectate, Immodium A-D
Indegestion/Heartburn
Maalox, Mylanta, Tums, Pepcid, Prilosec OTC, Zantac, Pepto-Bismol, Avoid spicy or greasy foods and large meals at bedtime
Nosebleeds
Cold cloth to nose with pressure, Use a humidifier, Apply Vaseline
Backache
Heating pad (do not sleep on pad), Massage or warm bath
Insomnia
Warm relaxing baths, Benadryl, Tylenol PM or Unisom
Sore Throat
Warm salt water gargles, Lozengers, Chloroseptic Spray, Tylenol
Rash/Itching Skin
Caladryl, Benadryl, Oatmeal baths and lotions, Cool showers and baths
*Avoid cold and cough medications containing pseudoephedrine until after your first trimester (14 weeks)
